Highwaythem
2025
Sound installation; mixtape (1:06 hr)

Commissioned by LJ Roberts for their exhibition in “The Queer Mechanix of the Lands Currently Referred to as the U.S. & Canada Before & During the 54th Year of the Stonewall Era” at Hales Gallery, NY,  September 4–October 18, 2025. More info here.

The exhibition presents a cartography of queer auto mechanics as a multi-media project, combining large-scale textile with printmaking and sound. I created the sound element, which is structured like a mixtape, featuring pop, rock and country songs and fragments of songs, whose subject matter connects with the themes of the show, and which are deeply meaningful to the artist.

I produced, arranged and performed the mixtape with contributions from:

Akua Carson: vocals on America, Deeper Well, Hurt
Shannon Funchess: vocals on Chicago
Cassandra Jenkins: vocals on Fast Car
Willy Kubas: vocals on Stay Alive
Emily Wells: vocals on Red Dirt Girl
Dan Iead: pedal steel guitar, electric guitar on Highwaythem
Steve Marion: electric guitar on Red Dirt Girl
Jake Sokolov-Gonzalez: cello on Deeper Well, Highwaythem, Red Dirt Girl
